Lesson 1

田中ともうします。

お名前は … 。

お名前は、なんて … 。

お名前は、なんとおっしゃいますか。

お仕事は … 。

お仕事は、何をしていらっしゃいますか。

お仕事は、何をなさっているんですか。

ごしゅっしんは、どちらですか。

よい、おとしを。(said before the New Year’s)

りょこう、きをつけてね。(said to a friend going on a trip)

ごりょこう、おきをつけて、行ってきてください。(a polite equivalent)

それは、いけませんね。おだいじに。(said to someone who is ill or

whose family member is ill)

When you introduce a family member, do NOT use こちらは。

e.g.　ははです。Not　こちらは、ははです。

When you state a family member’s occupation, use the humble form if there is one.

e.g.　あには、きょうしです。

Lesson 2

Use polite expressions when talking to a neighbor.

e.g.　どちらへ。(do NOT use どこへ行きますか。)

Lesson 3

少々、お待ちください。and　お待たせいたしました。are used in many other

situations, not just in restaurants.

お待たせいたしました。can be used whenever you have kept someone waiting

even if very little time has elapsed. This is only used in polite situations.

もうしわけ、ございません。is used if you have made a grave error or if you

need to apologize in a very polite situation.
