なら “if it is”
「なら」is often used to
restate or clarify the item, thing, proposal, circumstances, etc. under discussion for the purpose of making some sort of
comment, as shown in the examples.
1. きゃく:これは けっこんのプレゼントにどうでしょうか。
てん員:これなら とても きれいですから、いいプレゼントになるでしょう。
2. ともこ:このドレスは こんどのパーティーにどうでしょうか。
ゆりこ:このドレスは ちょっと…。あのドレスなら、いいでしょう。
3. 田 中:スキーに行きたいんですけど、どこがいいでしょうねえ。
山 下:スキーなら、レイク・タホは どうでしょう。
Note
1: The function of 「なら」is not
unlike the function of the topic marker 「は」,
except for a greater emphasis. Compare:
A: おにいさんは どこにいらっしゃいますか。
B: あにですか。あになら、こうえんにいます。(If
it’s my brother you are looking for)
B: あにですか。あには こうえんにいます。
Note
2: 「だったら」can be
used in place of 「なら」.
e.g. スキーだったら、レイク・タホがいいですよ。
Note
3: 「でしたら」is
the polite version. 「だったら」is
casual. 「なら」is neutral.
